You have give them your serial number for the phone (HTCxxx) on the web-site, where they will give you a Key. So after some research, I found that you can download a program for Revolutionary.io ( - linux or - for windows). There is always a way, and I do not give up easily.

I wasted my time trying to mount the /system read-write only to find that copying files into /system does not work. The flash is locked (called s-on) which prevents you from installing the "su" binary into /system/xbin (or anything in /system). These phones have the boot-loader locked (H-BOOT). After much screwing around trying to root the phone using adb, I ran into glitch. So in order to get there, I needed to be updated already (Chicken and Egg problem). The long part of the story is that RomManager will only work on 2.2 and above. The phone had Android 2.1 on it, which meant that Rooting it was a bitch. I did not attempt to put in ICS or JellyBean as the Aria does not have much in the way of memory. Thank you in advance.I updated my HTC Aria to Cyanogenmod 7.2 (CM7) the latest stable build. Please reconnect your device(4)" I have tried different settingPleases on my phone under "USB network settings" mostly "Smart network sharing". Then, after about a minute, I get another pop-up saying,"Device unavailable. When I click on "Check for firmware updates" I get a "Yes" answer and after a few minutes the phone appears in the Sync manger window saying "Phone connected Loading data". I've tried choosing different choices and not choosing anything. When I first plug in my phone, I get the windows sound and 3 windows on the upper right of my laptop asking what I want to do with the phoneq and the CD rom. I've installed the latest version of HTC Sync manager and when I attach my phone with the USB cable, it shows up in my Windows Device Manager working correctly. I have a Windows 8.1 64bit laptop and the Verizon version of the M8.

I've got the same problem as the OP, but installing the universal adb driver didn't help.
